HM.30: Import SARA ASCII File

Usage

This program will look for an ASCII file with the name of SARA.ASC .

After loading the imported file, make sure that it has this file name by using the appropriate UNIX commands (at the $ dollar prompt). The command …

cp /u/test/FILE1 /u/data/test/d0/SARA.ASC

... will copy the file FILE1 from the /u/testdirectory into the directory /u/data/test/d0 with the filename SARA.ASC .

It is important to ensure that the directory you copy into is the active data directory for the Maves (VL) system. Contact the Maves Help Desk for additional information, if necessary.

Preconditions

The SARA ASCII file is made available from the government (see HM Setups and Procedures for further information).

The file currently available is a .dbf file (dBase format). Consequently, it needs to be converted prior to loading onto the system, as follows:

1. Import the file into a PC database system (Microsoft Access, dBase, etc).
2. Use the "Save As" feature to save the file in ASCII delimited format, and rename the file (with a .txt extension).
3. Transfer the ASCII file to the UNIX system that is running the Maves (VL) applications. This can be done (eg.) by using the upload function available in the PC terminal emulation software (if a PC is being used to access the UNIX server), in conjunction with using the "xmodem -r" function on the UNIX machine. Alternately, you may use the "dosread" function in UNIX, and actually copy to and from a USB drive.
4. Rename the file in UNIX to SARA.ASC and place it in your Maves data Directory.
5. Now run program HM.30.

Subsequent Actions

Typically the next step is to add any additional UN numbers that were not included in the download. Use the following Job to add these UN Numbers:
